To find your public IP address, ISP, and approximate location, your browser contacts third-party lookup services (ipapi.co, ipify, ip.sb, and freeipapi.com). They see your IP address, as any website you visit does, and return the details shown above. The browser and device information on this page is read locally and not sent anywhere. NetCalcTools does not store your result. See the Privacy Policy for details.
What is an IP address?
An IP address is the number your device uses to send and receive data on the internet, similar to a return address on a letter. The address shown above is your public IP — the one your router presents to the outside world. Every device inside your home network typically shares this same public address while each has its own separate private IP (like 192.168.1.5) for talking to other devices on the local network.
IPv4 vs IPv6
IPv4 addresses are written as four numbers separated by dots (e.g. 203.0.113.42), and the total supply of them ran out years ago — most people now share addresses through their ISP or router via NAT. IPv6 addresses are longer, written as groups of hexadecimal digits separated by colons, and offer a practically unlimited supply. Many networks run both side by side today, which is why this tool checks for each separately.
Why does my location look approximate?
Your IP address is assigned to your ISP in blocks, and those blocks are registered to a general region rather than an exact address. Geolocation services match your IP against that registration data, which is usually accurate to the city or region but never to a specific street or building.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is my IP address?
Your IP address is the public identifier your internet connection uses to communicate with the rest of the internet. This tool shows the address your device is currently using, as seen from outside your network.
Why does my IP address change?
Most home internet connections use dynamic IPs, which your ISP can reassign periodically or whenever your router reconnects. Using a VPN, mobile data instead of Wi-Fi, or a different network will also show a different IP.
What's the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?
IPv4 addresses are the older, shorter format (like 192.168.1.1) and the pool of available addresses is nearly exhausted. IPv6 is the newer format with a vastly larger address space, written as groups of hexadecimal digits. Many networks now support both simultaneously.
Is this location exact?
No. IP-based geolocation is approximate and typically only accurate to the city or region level, based on which block of addresses your ISP has assigned to which area. It cannot pinpoint a street address.
Does this tool store my IP address?
No. Your IP is looked up live through a public API directly from your browser and displayed to you. NetCalcTools does not log or store it.
